New Music

20/06/2011

As part of our News & Views section of the website we will be getting different members of staff to detail some of the music they have been recently listening to. Hopefully, you will discover a rich world of unknown musical pleasure...

Chris Williamson - Sales:

Arctic Monkeys – Suck it and See

The forth album from the Arctic Monkeys has seen the group consolidate their signature sound and (sometimes not so) suitable lyrics to great effect.  The album can effectively be split in two parts. The first five tracks are the most radio friendly, including Brick by Brick and The Hellcat Spangled Shalalala, while the remainder of the album makes you work somewhat harder for its affection. However it is the subtleties of the Monkeys that win you over in the end with soaring guitars and off mic chats (at the start of Library Pictures for example), and while the album won’t live up to the first album through sales, it is most listenable indeed.

Queens of the Stone Age – Rated R

Headlining The Other Stage at Glastonbury this year, QOTSA have given their fans a chance to pick the setlist. They will be playing the top ten tracks chosen from a list of around 50 on the BBC Radio 1 website. And, if they are playing anything from their Rated R album, the lucky muddy fans are sure to enjoy it! From Lost Art Of Keeping A Secret to Better Living Through Chemistry the album sears at a outrageously rebellious pace from start to finish.

Plan B - The Defamation Of Strickland Banks

Last year gave Plan B a deserved push into the mainstream after previously releasing records on his own label. The Defamation Of Strickland Banks is full of hits, with a classic mix of soulful music and storytelling lyrics that bring this concept album to life. From the first track to last, it's one of the few albums that doesn't require a skip button.
